I fancy myself an advanced Linux user so I decided to use the download version. After breaking one drive, the second works great. The next time I will just buy one pre made. You will most definitely not be able to make your own using Windows because it has no way of resizing the partition or running a file system check. There are ways to read the ext3 file system in Windows, but no way to write to it or manipulate it. I don't know about MAC? So don't even attempt it if you are not using Linux. Under Linux I was able to use dd and fdisk. I think instead of fdisk you could also use qtparted or gparted.
I Like:
-Xtra Ordinary just works without messing with a bunch of settings.
-Looks great.
-Open Office runs great! I can't believe how well it runs on this slow little machine.
-Great selection of applications
-Easy to connect wireless.
-A well tweaked Gnome Desktop. Fast!
-After seeing the game blog I tried my USB joystick and it works! I spent days trying to get it to work with Fedora and gave up.
I don't like:
-I am loyal to Gnome and Linux, but E17 looks nicer.
-If you create a new user the desktop settings are plain jane Gnome or KDE. Per Todd, I copied the E17 desktop files over from /usr/share/xo-default-desktop-settings and that worked for the E17 desktop. I do understand that this is designed to be a single-user system so I can't complain too much. And I am glad the tools to make and use additional user accounts are at least included.
My Ideas:
-Make clearlooks the default desktop theme in both E17 and Gnome.
-Include a way to easily reset the desktop back to all the default settings after someone like me changes just about every setting that can possibly be changed.
-Finish the desktop version so I can use it on my PC.
