Where can I get Technical Support?

Linux Mint's purpose is to produce an elegant, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution.

Some of the reasons for the success of Linux Mint are:

  • It's one of the most community driven distributions. You could literally post an idea in the forums today and see it implemented the week after in the "current" release. Of course this has pros and cons and compared to distributions with roadmaps, feature boards and fixed release cycles we miss a lot of structure and potentially a lot of quality, but it allows us to react quickly, implement more innovations and make the whole experience for us and for the users extremely exciting.
  • It is a Debian-based distribution and as such it is very solid and it comes with one of the greatest package managers.
  • It is compatible with and uses Ubuntu repositories. This gives Linux Mint users access to a huge collection of packages and software.
  • It comes with a lot of desktop improvements which make it easier for the user to do common things.
  • There is a strong focus on making things work out of the box (WiFi cards drivers in the file system, multimedia support, screen resolution, etc).

This edition includes the following updates:

  • All application and system updates applied as of July 19, 2010.
  • The latest OpenOffice.org version available for the distribution.
  • Sun Java Runtime and web browser Plugin.
  • Macromedia Flash player.
  • Calibre - is not only an ebook viewer that can display all the major ebook formats, but also a complete e-library solution. It includes library management, format conversion, news feeds to ebook conversion as well as e-book reader sync features.
  • TrueCrypt (and easy crypt in Ubuntu versions).
  • Skype - PC to PC, PC to phone, and phone to PC voice and video communication software.
  • Skysentials - Adds additional features to skype, namely SMS, register mobile, and transfer calls.
  • Pidgin-Skype - Skype plugin for the Pidgin Instant Messenger.
  • VLC Media Player - a popular music and video player that is not dependent upon any specific desktop environment.
  • Support for playing encrypted DVDs, using the libdvdcss2.
  • Multimedia Codecs (as supplied by the distribution). Example, in Ubuntu included is Ubuntu Restricted Extras from the Ubuntu repository.
  • The latest Mozilla Firefox Browser version available for the distribution.
  • The latest Thunderbird Email client available for the distribution.
  • Chromium Web Browser - a fast/light alternative browser that integrates well with the various google services.
  • Dropbox is an easy  way to store, sync, and, share files Online.
  • Spideroak - Online backup, synchronization, sharing, remote access, and storage.
  • Dialup Support Connect via dialup Internet services.
  • Cheese is a cheesy program to take pictures and videos from your web cam.

From this page you may obtain either the 32 or 64 bit Live Installable DVD. If you are unsure get the 32 bit version which will work on both 32 bit and 64 bit PCs. Although a 64 bit operating system can provide better performance under most circumstances, unless being used for heavy graphics editing or in a heavily used production server, there is generally little if any perceivable performance difference. In instances where Windows drivers may be required via ndiswrapper, 64 bit driver s may be unavailable.
